In my experience they are very good if you're getting a high quality blade. There are some on ebay that are made in Pakistan or wherever that are fancy box cutters. See the razors to avoid in the SRP Wiki beginner's guide here. Welcome to SRP.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Depends who made them... There's a well known knife- and razormaker who probably still can't do it (judging from his past failures and recent song&dance).
Just get it from somebody who's good at it and will sell you complete honed and well shaving razor, not a razor-shaped piece of decoration.

Just another style of razor. If all you are interested in is a good shave they aren't worth it. If you're in to the skill and workmanship thing then that's the reason to get it.

Damascus steel razors will take and hold an edge just as well as any other well made razor.
In other words, stay with the known and tested brands and you will be just fine.
But as the previous poster stated, they are not the cheapest razors, so you wouldn't buy them just for the shave.

I have several in my shave-rotation, and they are all fabulous lookers and shavers!

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....
