Agreed... these razors do need to be touched up on the hone. But they are very good quality and fun to use once you get the technique down.

I intend to purchase one of these soon. Any updates suggesting yea or nea?
I posted the following in the Shave-of-the-Day thread a while ago:
"Razor: Kanenaga Kamisori
Brush: Crowley & Tosh Silvertip Badger
Cream: Santa Maria Novella Crema da Barba
Pre-shave: Truefitt & Hill Pre-Shave Oil
Scuttle: Georgetown Pottery G20
Balm: L'Occitane Cade Juniper aftershave balm
This was the first shave after honing this new kamisori. I'd shaved a few times with the OOTB edge, stropping only, and found it wanting -- it left some serious razor burn on my neck, and really dug in on the chin. After a careful inspection using a 10X loupe, the bevel near the tip was simply not set, and had a small chip. I honed it using the following: first, a Bester 1200, then on a Takashima J-nat, then on a Yaginoshima J-nat. On each I used a 10-1 ratio (very light sweep on the ura side). I used the loupe periodically to see what I was doing to the bevel. It cleaned up nicely, was even all the way to the tip. I put about 50 laps on a steer hide strop, and shaved, basically two passes, but with some fussing around the chin. This was one of the best shaves I've had since I started with straights of any kind. Smooth, and no irritation.
One thing I noticed: the kamisori likes a very wet, slick lather; my other straight, a Mastro Livi New Grind, seems to like a more traditional, foamy lather."
I've used it a few times since, and have honed it twice more, just because. It's a great little razor. I got mine from chefsknivestogo.com, for about $115. (great site, btw. Razors are listed under "Knife Accessories").
If you find one for a decent price, I'd get it.
Cheers,
Jack
Thanks Jack. I knew I saw one of these somewhere, but didn't realize it was one of our SOTD threads.
I also had to set a bevel on mine when I received it. I only have 2 Kamisoris ( this one and a vintage) and have only used each a couple times so I can't make a real comparison on performance yet. But I will say that the craftsmanship on this new Kamisoris is top notch, I don't think you can beat it for the price.
I shaved with the Kanenaga Kamisori again this weekend. After stropping the kamisori 50 laps on a steer hide strop, I just used some soap to wash my face, a hot rag to soften up 3 days worth of beard, and some Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood shave soap. I did two passes: WTG, and slightly XTG. No cuts, no nicks, great shave. I could feel some stubble if I rubbed my face against the grain, but the beard looked cleanly shaven. My skin stretching has vastly improved, adding to the success of this shave.
I am a fan of this reasonably priced kamisori. Get one if you can.
Cheers,
Jack
Has anyone bought anything from Japannippon? Theres a western jap razor I want to get from him BADLY!!!
Mine is en route from Osaka. Thanks!
I haven't, but others here have mentioned that site. Not to be too PC, but I'm pretty sure we have Japanese members. I probably wouldn't throw that term around much.Quote:
