Default Lifespan of oil on a razor.

Have any of you guys rinsed the oil off of a razor that has not been in use for a while and then re-oiled it with fresh oil? Is this necessary? I wonder if the oil might eventually break down over time and discolor the blade. By the way, I now use heavy mineral oil instead of 3 in 1.

As long as you stay away from food oils which can turn rancid most oils should remain intact for a long time but if you are going to store something long term I think you need something heavier duty unless you re-oil periodically. They sell products for long term storage.

    MikeMN,

I use Sentry Solutions TufGlide on my razors every time I use them. I live in an old, cold, damp Victorian house so I take no risks with my razors

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

    Gentlemen:

After every shave I treat my razors to a touch of alcohol and camellia oil. At the last SRP meet in Wisconsin our friend Utopian suggested a mixture of a small amount of food-grade mineral oil to a large amount of alcohol. I will try that next week, since much of this week I've been up and about early and have had to use the double edge razor.

    Regards,

    Obie

I'm not sure what was used on one that I recently acquired, but I didn't think it was going to unwrap from the bubble wrap it was shipped in it was so sticky! Needless to say, it will be spending a little extra time in the rubbing alcohol before it comes near my face!

Vasoline? Or maybe cosmoline... either one of those will last you darn near forever

My razors see a coat of heavy mineral oil after every shave. The oil does last a while, but since my razor box holds razors blade-down, you can imagine that the oil does drip down eventually due to gravity. It would be wise to check on them every now and then if they are being stored for extended periods of time without use.
