    Default My Antique Razor

I have recently become interested in taking up straight razor shaving. While researching what razor to buy I remebered an old box that was given to me after my grandfather past years ago. Mainly full of misc stuff, but i did remeber a straight razor being one of them. I managed to find it again and I am thinking about restoring it and was just wondering what anyone thinks about my find and if it is worth restoring. It seems to be in descent shape for an antique but I cannot determin the age.

I have searched the internet for a while to try and get a rough estimate of the age but to no avail. Nothing out there seems to have the same engraving of "Jewel" on the blade. Nor does it have an item no like most Boker blades seem to do.

Does anyone have an idea on how old this is and if it is worth restoring?

    Thanks
    Jay

Pictures will help with that assessment, but if it has any sentimental value, it probably should not be your first restoration or shaver, as both can lead to the destruction of your irreplaceable razor.

I'm not very sentimental about the razor. I have other items for that

All that the razor looks like it needs is new scales and some polishing with Maas or Turtle Wax Polishing compound. After that, get it honed and it should be a great shaver.

An old Boker! Nice find! Yeah, send it to someone to get some scales and a good hone job and you'll have a real nice razor there!

    And welcome to SRP!

That's a good un. Like everyone said, new scales and honed up you'll have a fine shaver. Old Bokers are hard to beat and one that belonged to a family member is even more so. Here is the Boker stamping guide to date the razor.Name: tree_history.jpg

    Well, you should be...

I inherited an old Larkin from my grand dad and it's in much the same shape as yours is - except the scales are in surprisingly good shape. I polished a bit of the tarnish off with some "Mother's" and put it to the 4000/8000 and the strop and it's a great shaver. I had considered sending it off for a full restoration, but it's worth nothing - to anyone, but me. The more I thought about it, the more I didn't want to take the chance of losing it the mail.

I have decided it's light petina is very attractive and every time I shave with it I think of my Grandfather - as he shaved with it after coming home from the coal mine before going to Church - to preach.

That razor doesn't look that bad.

If I were you, I'd polish it with a bit of "Mother's", pin some scales around it and give it a hone and strop. I'm sure, in short time, you'll find everything you need right here at SRP and when you shave with that razor you'll be very pleased with yourself.

You'll probably find it to be one of your favorites and the one you'll be sure to pass on above all others in your collection.

    Enjoy.

That's a VERY nice patina coloring there. Personally, I wouldn't restore it, I'd just get it properly honed and rescaled. To me, the hone wear gives it a nice two-tone coloring effect; one that I really like. A nice, new set of black scales and white wedge would go a long way. Very nice Boker you have on your hands!
