Thanked: 275No. It's a distillation product, but it's too volatile to be considered an "oil".
As soon as you put it on the blade, it will evaporate and leave the steel unprotected.

very good point, thankyou. In that case what products are easily obtainable (i.e. from a chemist) that will do the job? I really want to get the hold of something to use and not have to wait the week some places (amazon) can take to send stuff out.

Baby oil is readily available at any pharmacy or grocery store. It is just mineral oil plus fragrence. I use it all the time on my blades.

Thanked: 3795Mineral oil would be available in the same place. It is used as an intestinal lubricant and would be on a shelf in the same area as anti-constipation aids. The advantage of mineral oil, as opposed to baby oil with its fragrances, is that you can also use it on wood cutting boards, which remain the most sanitary cutting surface for kitchens.

I actually had a huge bottle of it from doing some cutting boards... just put some in a smaller bottle and I was good to go.
