New 5/8 Revisor Solingen Extra (5-0003)
Yesterday was my first shave with this brand new razor. I was rather disappointed. IMO, it was not shave ready. It barely passed the arm test and the shave was not very comfortable or very effective. I always like to try the razor as it is with the factory edge before working on it. However, I am spoiled because many of my newer razors have been honed by Lynn, who sets a high standard for any new razor purchases.
Today, I did 12 laps on a Franz Swaty Barber stone and 60 laps on leather with the new razor, both with a light touch. What an improvement. Now, it can join the ranks of really good razors. Apparently, the edge just needed refinement. Now it shaves both comfortably and very close to BBS on the first WTG pass. A beautiful razor, now it shaves beautifully as well. I am a very happy camper.
Interestingly, my recent purchase of a NOS 4/8 Filarmonica Inox shaved great with the factory edge right out of the box. Makes me wonder if they spent more time "professionally" honing it before it left the factory.
I highly recommend the Revisor 5/8 Solingen Extra. It is a great shaver and is an absolutely gorgeous razor.

Congratulations Donald!!! YEAAA!! I also tried something the other day that proved really nice on these Revisors that might microchip a bit. I have a piece of balsa wood I bought at Hobby Lobby and put some green polishing compound on it, Cr Ox and gave it about 10 laps on that on the edge of the counter top as a backing and took another look... and another shave. WHOLE different razor. Maybe I lucked out, but just passing it on FWIW.
PS (and off topic) I like Str8Shooter's avatar. Built one like that from scratch. AR-15 tuned lower, with 6.8 SPC II upper, 16" bbl 1: 11.25 twist and 5R rifling, Adams Arms Piston system instead of DI gas. A real "thumper".Last edited by Gibbs; 06-22-2011 at 02:35 PM.
