    Default J.R Torrey Razor

Went to an Antique store today and bought a new razor, I'm debating if I should send it away to get honed, I don't know alot about the brand can someone help me out some?

Torrey made some of the best razors ever. They are a perfect example of the high caliber of American steel. Definitely hone it and USE it!

I'm also debating if I should send it away to get honed or save up and buy a set of hones for myself.

If they are as good as you say then I suppose 15 dollars was a pretty good deal?

Torrey's are wonderful razors, but they are hard steel and can be difficult to hone at times. I would say it's well worth the $15 and would suggest sending it out to be honed.

Have you been using straights? Do you have any that have been honed?

I wouldn't learn to hone on that razor. As far as I can tell she is a beaut and should be restored as well. If you want to learn to hone I would pick up some lesser brands or no names to start on, there are plenty of high quality solingen, sheffield and american razors out there with not much of a history behind them.

Go to restorations and customs, look for a post called Tequila sunrise-that's mine courtesy of glen, and its one of the best razors I own,and that's out of twenty big name brands-absolutely one of the best shavers you ll ever have. Get it honed by one of our honemisters, and you wont be sorry,I know I'm not.

I wholeheartedly agree. Torrey is the epitome of American steel and craftsmanship. You did good! Now get it honed!
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
