Blade Length
Hello, I have been looking into straight razors but unfortunately I am also in college. The razor I was looking into was the dovo evony spike point. College rules where I go say the blade has to be less than 3 1/2in so from tip of the blade to the hilt/handle. So if anyone has that razor or a comparable one could they post the length of it. Thank you.

I live in the dorms and that appears to be the rule from what I can tell. And of course not I have no intention of carrying the razor

Thanked: 3795You would still be okay. The length of the blades of nearly all straight razors is 3 inches. Some are 3 1/2, but pretty much only custom razors would be longer. Any Dovo is going to comply with that rule, stupid as it may be.

That is what I thought but I think they count the small handle that you hold while shaving in the measurement unless it is already counted and I do not realize it.

They just might count the distance from the tip to the scales. You are liable to encounter members of the intellectual classes at college, and that bodes ill for common sense in such a situation. Why not write and get a reply on what they consider distance to the handle to be, in such a case? You should explain that the razor is never held by the scales (no need to say "except when slashing someone"), and they are really a structurally weak cover for safe storage.

Thanked: 2591I think you will be fine with the Dovo, also if no one knows then you will have nothing to worry about.
Now you will have a problem when you start collecting razors .Stefan

Thank you, I suppose I will try and ask around a bit to get a definite answer on the rule.

Thanked: 2591One other thing you can do, is follow the classifieds for Japanese western straights. There a variety of brands that are with 2" blades and the total to the scales length will not be more than the limit you have.

Since you will grasp the razor at the tang, doesn't that make the shoulder the hilt? The cutting edge of just about every production straight razor is less than 3.5" so you should be fine
But if the college rule interpreters decide to measure the entire blade from point to tail, you'll have to either shave with a corn razor or get creative with your rule-followingFind me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage
