Thanked: 2french razor
Hi Guys, i have just aquired a lovely looking and shaving french razor, i was hoping to find out a little history as i do with what few razors i have.
The makings on the scales are like marble effect with a brass inlay, in a diamond shape the words wonderful reg are inlaid,
on the neck on one side is garantie solingen and the no 315, on the other side is P.VIELLERIBIERE ST LEONARD.
I am of two minds the inlay looks very art deco but with no country name i thought mid - late 1800's.
not interested in value at all just history and background.
On the blade very faint is solingen .
if some kind folk want to tell me how to post a picci i will do.
ta any way

This recent post covers the posting of pictures. Your blade sounds German made for a retailer.

I have only just got this razor, gave it a quick rub on the old oil stone and then stropped it and it shaved lovely.

It's made in Germany for a French retailer.
With a frown like that I'm not sure I would be using that.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 2The wear on the spine, looks and fits with a thumb if you hold the razor with scales inline,
I am newbie to all this frown business etc, Why wouldn't you shave with a frown like that ( he types whilst frowning), i have two razors with frowns both shave very well and i have to say i prefer them to the straight edge ones.
Should the edge be straight or convex or concave ?
with a lack of country of origin any idea as to date?Last edited by bambi; 07-08-2011 at 03:42 PM. Reason: thunk of sumat

Frowns are more difficult to sharpen and shave with but, given that there are quite a few about, people obviously managed to, as indeed are you. I'd be inclined to put its date at more like your first guess of pre-war, the country of origin was an agreement rather than a rule. Sheffield seems to have more or less adhered to it (though sometimes it's difficult to say), Solingen slightly less so and France seems to have regarded it as an irrelevance worthy only of a Gallic shrug of indifference. That last sentence is based purely on my inadequately sized sample of razors and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Thanked: 2Alan, i have to say that in the uk we adhere to all rules, guidance, and any thing else we are asked to do, the french and i guessed this may have been the case just a Gallic shrug and no more is done,
It looks pretty thats why i bought it, to try to help win over the fpo( fun prevention officer).
