Thread: Looking For Some Information

Hello All,

Just wanted to see if anyone knew anything about some recent eBay purchases. Thought I'd try my hand at restoring some old razors. At least to my limited ability. We shall see...

Anyways, I'm looking for some history as well as the value of the following (sorry about the pictures):

I've already started removing rust and tarnish from the safety razors & I've removed the scales from the straights (was able to save 2 and the washers) and I've put the blades in molasses.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the mollasses do?

In the workshop forum, one of the members cleaned his blades by soaking them in molases. It's kind of an experiment, I thought I'd give it a try.

The GEM Micromatic Open Comb is, for me, one of the three best shaving safety razors I have ever used (the others are an English Ever-Ready 1912 and the GEM Micromatic Clog-Pruf).

Paired with the GEM PTFE Coated Stainless blades, they give superb shaves (for me).

Thanks Russ, that was quite the video of that guy shaving, he's insanely fast LOL. Is that you?
My Micromatic has some brassing on the top, I don't think thats fixable? I'll take the dremel to it tomorrow and see how it polishes up and if I can find some blades for it I'll definitely give it a try!

No, it's not me

In addition to your Micromatic Open Comb, you also have a GEM 1912

A lot of people polish off the finish if it is patchy, leaving just the brass; (the early GEM/Ever-Readys' were nickel plated, the later ones were chromium plated).

They look lovely with the brass polished

You could also get them re-plated; electroless nickel is possibly the easiest way to go.

Thanks Russ, I started polishing the 1912 of and it's brassy too. I gotta figure out how to even it out a bit Thanks for all the information on the GEM's I'm quite looking forwar to having a shave with them any idea what they are worth?

I agree with everything he said. 100%. My initial foray into wet shaving was with a GEM 1912 and I'm glad I went with a SE instead of a DE or I might not have stuck with it. I've tried several several DEs with several blade combos, and nothing comes close to SE smoothness.

I now shave with a OCCM (your #1 above) and I love it. I picked up a Clog-Pruf recently as well and it is even better than the OCMM.
GEM ptfe coated blades are the bomb.
If anyone wants a good (read great) deal on some DEs, shoot me a pm. I'm open to trades.

As far as valuations, doubt you'll get anyone to give you anything. It appears to be verboten on this forum.
