    Default Platts Straightrazor

Hi, Total newb here. Just got my first straightrazor. It's by Platts, Eldred, PA. Marbled green bakelite
handle. Is it a good razor worth trying? My research shows them being bought out by Case Cutlery Bradford
    PA in 1903.

no expert on razors, but if the geometry of the blade is good, at that age, it should have very fine grained steel and take a nice edge pretty easily.

Most vintage blades are made of good steel, and sharpen-up nicely. But if it's an antique-store item, it's probably not sharp enough to shave with.

Did you buy it "shave-ready" (that is, somebody recently honed it), or are you going to send it out for honing, or are you going to hone it yourself?

+1 Charles. Don't fall into the first straight razor trap, expecting it to shave when you first get it. If it hasn't been seen by someone with the correct skills to hone a razor, it probably is no longer sharp enough to get a comfortable shave with.

If you try it, and think it sucks, send it out to be honed and try it again.

Don't let a bad first shave with a straight ruin all the rest of your shaves forever. That is a rookie trap, almost happened to me!

    Good luck mate!

Get it honed by somebody. Would probably clean up nicely.
