Platts Straightrazor
Hi, Total newb here. Just got my first straightrazor. It's by Platts, Eldred, PA. Marbled green bakelite
handle. Is it a good razor worth trying? My research shows them being bought out by Case Cutlery Bradford
PA in 1903.Last edited by suzkat11; 08-01-2011 at 07:51 PM.

Thanked: 458no expert on razors, but if the geometry of the blade is good, at that age, it should have very fine grained steel and take a nice edge pretty easily.

Thanked: 275Most vintage blades are made of good steel, and sharpen-up nicely. But if it's an antique-store item, it's probably not sharp enough to shave with.
Did you buy it "shave-ready" (that is, somebody recently honed it), or are you going to send it out for honing, or are you going to hone it yourself?

+1 Charles. Don't fall into the first straight razor trap, expecting it to shave when you first get it. If it hasn't been seen by someone with the correct skills to hone a razor, it probably is no longer sharp enough to get a comfortable shave with.
If you try it, and think it sucks, send it out to be honed and try it again.
Don't let a bad first shave with a straight ruin all the rest of your shaves forever. That is a rookie trap, almost happened to me!
Good luck mate!
Mike-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --
