I've only been restoring razors for a few months and I can tell you that all of the advice you've recieved is dead on. An important heirloom like that deserves the best. It is very easy to mar those scales when unpinning, and obviously, irreplaceable, as no two are exactly alike. This is not a razor to learn or experiment on. There are plenty for sale on e-bay if you want to learn how to restore. I am saying this with the presumption you do want to provide your Grandfathers razor with the best possible chance to be a cherished possession for you and your grandchildren. At the very least, let one on these guy's look at it and give you a professional assessment. I hope this helps you. Don.
