Thread: Microtome razor

A few months ago I posted a Microtome razor and Glen suggested that I reshape the blade like some sort of medieval axe and rescale it for maximum effect. At that time I blacked out the areas of the blade with a magic marker that I would remove and the resulting shape was really medieval. But I opted to not alter the blade shape at that time.

I have since thought about reshaping this blade but still hesitate for fear of altering a piece of history. My question is "should I or shouldn't I" do it. Part of me wants to and part of me doesn't.

I am torn between some sort of medieval shape and turning it into a Japanese Kamisori blade. Help me out here, boys. What should I do with this microtome blade?

Do you really need to modify it? I have a J. Smith & Sons 3415 barbers notch that shaves very well, if you can use it to shave why modify it? Also, I'm not an expert but I think that microtomes have been produced in a lesser quantity than razors, so it could be a rare piece for a collection

What a shame - looks nice, like a W&B Diamond edge. I have a Joseph Rodgers Microtome in mint condition, I think I will just leave it be as a curiosity. Always an option.

bought a joseph rodger microtome thinking it was a wedge and i was going to get rid of it,then i was going to reshape it like a japanese blade but lately i've been thinking of just keeping as is,i haven't seen many and it only has a small patch of pits on the flat side other than that it's perfect and never been honed or used by the look of it,as a part of history and not likely to be made again it's worth keeping it for what it is i think

I think it looks good the way it is. I would not change it.

As awesome as that blade loos it could look cooler with a few mods. There are plenty out there, why not have fun?
But, what we say shouldn't have any bearing on what you do. This is your project and should make you happy. You don't need one of us to tell you what to do, it sounds like your mind is already made up.

I would keep as is . just hone similar to Japanese blade.
