Thread: What's the purpose of a third pin?

I've seen some razors with a third pin the in center of the scales. What does that actually do? Or is it just decorative?

My opinion and the general consensus is that it offers aesthetic appeal.

It can be both decorative and serve a purpose. It helps give stability to the scales especially with larger blades.

Referring only to vintage razors here

I have never seen a Tang resting on one unless there was something wrong with the scales
They tend to cause warping rather than stop it
They do strengthen the entire set of scales with added rigidity
They also seem to re-contour the curve of the scales to avoid the scales rubbing on the tang, an advantage to Gold etched razors...
I have never seen any real pattern to why and when they where added or subtracted even on the same brand/type of razor...

They do look cool when done right

So what is the correct answer ????? Don't know myself but I keep looking for it

I've always thought it was a style thing. One that has benefits but still style. I figure if it was the mark of a quality razor all the upscale razors would have them but they don't. I have them on top of the line razors and I have them on bottom of the line.

I thought it was so the guys that rescale razors could charge another ten bucks
