Thread: Oil for rust prevention

Anyone have a recommendation on an oil to use to help prevent rust on a stored straight?

pretty much anything you would use to store a firearm.... rem-oil... breakfree CLP...


DO NOT USE WD-40...

it is not a lubricant... it is liquid evil....

paco+1 I like the Rem-Oil. Breakfree is fine, but contains teflon that does nothing for rust prevention. Only its carrier, or "base' works to stop rust. It cost more than Rem Oil and works no better IMO. best regards, wildhog

Tufglide, camellia oil, balistol, renaissance wax - all viable options.

Renaissance Wax: not oily and lasts forever. Great barrier between the blade and humidity.

From my own experience, Sentry Solutions TufGlide is a most excellent product to use for preserving your blades. It is a dry film preservative, and is very clean to use.

MIneral oil (e.g. Baby Oil) is a most cost effective product to use, and is readily available.

For day-to-day use, the razor gets wiped with TufGlide after the blade has been rinsed, dried and stropped.

For medium term storage, I wipe my razors first with TufGlide, and when that has dried, with Ballistol (mosty mineral oil).

For long-term storage, I coat my blades with RIG grease.

The best product I know is AG Russell no rust. It's not an oil but silicon based and is designed for knives and guns. It's what I use for long term storage and I've had no issues with it.
