Heheh, I've seen some that looked like they were used like that. Others that look like somebody tried to make them into cheese graters. Keep your eyes open though...you can get some phenomenal deals at antique shops.

Good idea on having them honed up. The first go round is critical. Then you get to experience what razor sharp really is. I thought I knew at first, but I was amazed at just how sharp Sharp really is. Then if you want to learn honing you've got some experience for what it should be like. (And I support the idea of learning to hone.)

I was blessed to get a razor from my Dad that was his grandfather's, and a razor from his mom (my grandmother who's still living) that was my grandfather's grandfather's razor. They're very special things to have...and I'm still not up to the challenge of honing them myself yet...but soon. After I get a few more under my belt, then I'll hone up the family heirlooms for the first time myself.
