    Default BARBERS NOTCH

This might sound like a stupid question....But what is the purpose of the "Barbers Notch" on the end of the Razor's blade?.....does it serve some practical function?...or is it merely aesthetic?

Welcome to SRP. There are many threads that ask this same question. A search of SRP will list them. There is also a write up in the WIKI located on the menu bar at the top of this web page. There is no definitive answer to this question but many guesses. The most logical is to assist in opening the razor one handed. Razors made by knife makers were a way to display how good their knives were. A good razor meant a great knife. Pocket knives made with blades that resemble razors with barber's notches, but not really meant for shaving, are referred to as one armed man's knife. Look up the other threads and the wiki article for past discussions on this topic.

Thanks Joed...I'll have a look.....Must admit I never thought of it being an aid to opening the blade.

My thought was to separate the noobies (myself included in that group) from the veterans. The veterans don't know the answer, they just know to not ask the question. LOL

When I think back to having my hair "Razor Cut"..with a proper straight back in the sixties...not these replaceable blade things...I remember the Barber holding the razor in one hand and snagging the blade open on the top pocket of his white coat......Thanks Joed for shaking my memory cells up.....That'll do for me as an explanation.
