Thanked: 13Scrappy new Wade & Butcher
Hi all,
I just got this off eBay, for a price that, in hindsight, I could have beaten by buying one off the Classifieds here. But hey, it's mine now. So, live and learn and all that, right?
Anyway, it's in pretty scrappy condition: some pitting, lots of discolouration, it sticks slightly when I open it and the (plastic?) scales have a chunk missing from one side and a small crack, but I was looking for a Wade & Butcher to use as a shaver, not a collector. And I need something to fill in once I find someone to send my Dovo to for a re-hone.
Here are some pics. I know nothing about the age or any of that, but the shank says Wade & Butcher / Sheffield, England' and has the Circled B, the arrow and the cross. Nothing on the blade.
Anyone know anything about 'em?
Also, I'm going to be looking for someone to give the thing a bit of a rehab, but money's an issue. Think it'll be worthwhile to try and find someone to just clean it up and re-hone it, then maybe do a re-scale later? I know that I won't be able to get a pristine razor out of this one, as the pitting is kind of pronounced, so I don't want to toss a bunch of cash that I don't have at a razor that won't be worth it.

Thanks, folks

It doesn't look to be in that bad a condition. No pitting on the edge and that's where it counts. Some Mass or other metal polish and a good honing should be all it needs. I can't see any problems with the scales. If they function no work needed there either. Of course you can spend more on it and get it looking new. The only issue I see is that the bevel is into the stabilizer at the heal. While this isn't a major problem it does add some to honing. It can be modified so that isn't an issue by re-grinding the radius at the heel so the stabilizer is below the bevel. Enjoy your shaves with this one!

Thanked: 13Zombie thread alert.
Update: I've finally sent the W&B off to gssixgun for a restore job. We're still discussing our options, but I'm glad to be finally moving on this...

Thanked: 13Yeah. Right after buying it, I blew $400 or so on washable diapers, so j put it aside then essentially forgot about it.

You can strop it on those diapers. It'll take thousands of laps, but it'll work. Make sure it's a clean diaper or you'll get a crappy shave out of it.
