Cool My first post! Any thoughts on my "new" razor?

I've just started using a straightrazor. It's going to take some time I think to get it down pat but I'm already getting the best shave of my life. I picked up an old razor for the job that was honed by a shop here in Los Angeles that carries new and old blades. On one side of the shank is "Costa & Sons Boston Mass". On the other "H.M. Christensen Brockton Mass". I can't say if it's a good blade or not...it's the only one I've ever tried. It's in a new plastic handle and I think it's 5/8" and hollow ground I believe. The blade shape is squared...called spike I read?

I'm planning to replace my Crabtree and Evelyn soap, wood bowl and old and worn boar brush with a nicer badger brush and proper cup. Still researching that.

In the mean time, my lady can't stop kissing me on the cheek!

I can't comment on your razor as I'm just starting out myself. But I'm in LA... can you tell me the name and location of this shop. It would be good to know where to get honing done locally if they're good at it. Thanks.

For that matter, are there any other members on the forum in the LA area? Are there any meet ups or anyone local to SoCal who wouldn't mind showing a newb some tips from time to time?

FYI, wait 'til your lady wants to start getting in on the fun as well! I've gotten a couple of SE's and DE's for backup and touch up razors while I learn the straight. My wife took one look at those and had me shopping for razors for her! She's as excited as I am to dump the cartridges for good! We're having a lot of fun with it.

    ENJOY!

It must be a fine razor if your lady can't stop kissing ya.

Sounds like you are off and running...

    Welcome and have fun.

Welcome to SRP. I've seen that brand name but can't tell you anything about the history. Someone may be along to shed some light on it. If you haven't done so already check out the SRP Wiki at the top of the page for lots of good info.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I can't say that I know much about that particular company but your face is the judge. It seems your face says its a good razor. In the end, the only real judge is you. I'm a newbie to this site as well and I can tell you you're going to love it. If you have a question, a problem, an issue, this is the place to get answers. Thes people have really dedicated themselves to preserving the fine art of shaving and I've never seen so many knowledgable people willing to give their time and knowledge.

It's called Ross Cutlery. They're located downtown LA on Broadway. They've been there since the 1930s. Great selection of cutlery, kitchen and other knives and probably 75 or so straightrazors, new and old, with all the gadgets.
