advice solicited and appreciated
Hello to all!
I am a long time straight shaver (Dovo 5/8 Pearlex Stainless) and am in the market for a new razor. I love the feel and shave of the Pearlex but would like to try something different this time around.
I'd like to stay with stainless, rounded nose, and a hollow grind. I'm open as to the material used for the scales. I would very much welcome any and all suggestions.

Hello and welcome to SRP
There a quite a few options out there, especially if you go with a vintage blade.
What I would do is to check out a Henckels from Shavingshop.com.
He has lots of them, and with many different scale materials.
I think most of them are Spanish point, but check for round points over there as well.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Welcome to SRP. I would go vintage as well and there are a ton of them that can be found here in the Classifieds.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I have thought about vintage as well. Frankly I haven't found any of the newer straights that I particularly liked; the steel is so-so and you end up paying for some type of exotic scale. Given the criteria of my first post, what would the experts here recommend for a vintage purchase?

Well we all know the saying " They dont make them like that anymore." And in my mind i believe that to be true even when it comes to straights.

The Dovo Pearlex is my everyday razor and it just keeps a superior edge; genuine quality; fit and finish second to none. Last time I used it though, it didn't feel right and upon closer inspection, a hairline crack had developed from the edge of one of the scales to the blade pivot pin. It's on its way back to Germany for a refurbish and sharpening.
Which left me with no backup and hence, my question now about purchasing another razor. I'm open to brand suggestions.

Im a huge fan of anything sheffield. There is just something about the steel that seems to give a awesome shave everytime. I also love my Boker Razors.

Thanked: 46Hi Hamilton and welcome to SRP!!! I also have been straight shaving for a long time. ( 40 years + ) If you are locked in on stainless, I would definitely go vintage. JA Henckels and Hess are two brands that you cannot go wrong with. In my use of straight's over the years I have found nothing to equel them in any way. Unless money is no object and you want to go custom or buy something high end like a CMon or one of the other less common Soligen razors, you will get more for your money with a Hess or a JA. I hope you will be able to find just what you want. Best Regards and Happy Shaving, wildhog

There are not that many stainless steel razors to choose from. You can have the dovo grenadille which is 6/8, or if you want to look for a vintage, the friodurs have large models, and heljestrand has a 6/8 stainless as well. C-mon or dubl duck if you can find it is probably going to be 5/8 and they're usually square point. Hess 44 are also 5/8 and I think I've seen them round pointed too. I also think the stainless pumas suck.
