Thanked: 0Boxes
I recently purchased several vintage razors at antique stores, and most came in original cardboard boxes. None of the writing on the boxes matched what was on the razors, however. I was wondering if this is just a case of the owner placing the wrong razor in the wrong box, or if there is something more to it. Does anyone know? Second, what do you do with the box? It isn't a display piece, but it's old and I hate to throw it away. Keeping it in a bocx somewhere seemes equally pointless. Any thoughts?

I don't believe it's anything more than keeping the razor safe in what ever was handy. This could have taken place anytime along it's path to you. For your second question, I don't see any real value in the empty boxes that may have who know what growing in them but I do keep them in storage. The nicer boxes that appear clean I keep a razor in and it may or may not match the name on the razor.

Thanked: 46Hi Mike and welcome to SRP, Myself, I don't store razors in the old boxes for two reasons. 1, Like Joed said, I dont know what is living in there, and 2, cardboard sucks up moisture like a sponge in the climate I live in. I don't through them away as if I give or sell a razor to someone, it is nice to have a vintage box for it. For traveling, I use a tooth brush holder. Best Regards and happy shaving, wildhog

There are a small number of people out there who actually collect these old boxes. I guess there is something for everybody.
It's very common to have mismatched boxes as these were common items (razors that is) and if a box was trashed they just used another. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I would say that the majority of razors I buy come in the wrong box. Basically, they are just packaging.

Thanked: 2209Pixelfixed....thanks for posting the pic of your display case. I was wondering what to build to hold both the razor and the box. Yours is a nice solution. Thanks

It is a real pity that there is no respect for boxes. I don't understand why on the collectors' market of LPs the package is essential for the value of the item, while on the razors one it is so disregarded that the purchase price is the same with or without the proper box... Keeping boxes into more consideration would make the game of collecting razors much more funny, in my opinion!

Thanked: 2027Agree with you 100%,alot of the long time straight people look upon razors as tools (which they are)nothing more.
Vintage watches,Guns,Knives, all carry a major premium.with orig.box and papers when sold on the secondary market.
Some of the old cloth covered Boxes are actually works of art IMO.
