What Birnando says, the Feathers are superb.

I recommend the new Feather SS, usually sold in Japan only, but these guys have a few in stock: Straight Razors - Feather Artist Club - Traditional Shaving

sorry for the delay; I've not been around a computer. I've been looking at the Artist Club. I'd love to get one in my hand before I shell out the cash. Thanks guys.

If you want quality get a feather. Yes it costs a lot more, but just as everything else, that's simply the cost of manufacturing quality. Since it's going to be a professional tool, I guess the cost difference probably doesn't matter that much, and you can justify it more than anybody else.

I have a Feather DX, but I must say, the poor mans version is the Diane 21 with the Japanese super stainless disposable blades. I thought you would want to know some options.

Another vote for the Parker. Inexpensive and great balance.

Not to hijack, and this is a dumb question, but why are you guys using disposable blades instead of the real thing? Wont the students have to know how to strop a razor etc after they graduate?

I reckon it is because most areas have regulations in place that basically prohibits use of proper straights nowadays.
As I understand it, it's because of the risk of contamination and the spreading of various diseases. Hepatitis and what not..

Mississippi is one of those states that requires barbers to use disposable blades, according to my instructor; I think the actual statute is a little vague. So, for the meantime that is what I'll use. Not overly happy about that, but it is what it is.
