Thanked: 32Original scales on this razor?
I picked up this Wostenholm razor recently that is in excellent original condition and does not look like it was ever used.
However I am wondering if these are the original scales since usually (at least from what I have observed) I see them on later razors. Is it possible these were replacements even though the razor was possibly never used? The upper pivot washer on the back side is a bit larger, and the pin on that side is not finished as well as on the other side if that offers any clues.

I'm no expert , but I don't think the scales are original . The blade may have been re-ground , too . Nice looking razor , though . Original scales or not .

Those scales are typical of German razors, and as this is a Sheffield blade, I would also guess that they're not original. Still looks like a great razor either way-- I just picked up my first Wosty, and can't wait to try it out.

Thanked: 32Dave5225,
I am curious why you think it was reground?
The grind marks that are on the blade are fresh and identical to the grind marks on all of the facets of the tang, this is why I had thought they were all original.
If someone reground the hollow, would they have reground the rest of the razor also? (I am sincerely asking, I surely am not very knowledgable on this area).
Thanks.

I didn't say I thought it is re-ground . I said it may have been re-ground . I'm no expert either , but the blade looks a little too good , and the tang looks a little heavy for the blade . Maybe re-ground , maybe not . I don't know . I don't think it really matters , you still have a fine razor .

Pins at either end are different. At the pivot it looks as though brass rod has been used, but I can not see clearly enough. The collar looks to be a different colour to the pin/rod.
I vote no. Notwithstanding the above, I have never seen such scales on a Sheffield.
And I'd say this was a regrind. Huge tang in proportion to blade width and a lack of visible hone wear are tell-tale signs.Last edited by Scipio; 10-17-2011 at 01:40 AM.
