    Default 13 Medallón Taurino

    What would you be willing to pay for a brand new never opened 13 Medallón Taurino? I have the opportunity to buy one for $750 but that still seems high even for this beauty. Should I make the lap?

    I recently bought a NOS razor that looked good in the pictures. However, when I got it, it had very light imperfections all across the blade on both sides. It had never been used but it had been stored for 100 years in a damp environment creating this subtle pitting. The razor shaves great but I am irritated by the less than pristine appearance.

    The problem with a sealed NOS razor is that you have no way of knowing its condition. With a price tag of $750, I would not be willing to take a chance but certainly that is a personal decision.

    I think Filarmonicas are fine razors but I am not willing to pay the current marketplace values. I searched long and hard and found a NOS 4/8 Inox in England and a NOS 5/8 DT12 in France for fairly reasonable prices. I was glad I waited.

    Good luck on your decision. As someone told me, "There will always be another razor."

    Each of us has to decide what is worth the money asked and that is relative to how flush with cash you are balanced with how bad do you want it? Personally I wouldn't pay that for any factory made blade. Now if I was purely a collector and it was some rare baby it might be a different story but I'm not so that makes it easy for me.

    I'd love to find a mint DD Napoleon but even though finding one would probably be a once in a lifetime event I still wouldn't pay the probable asking price for it.

    Medallon Taurinos are the same as Doble Temples(metal, grind etc) but are far more scarce, though not to scarce, is just that Doble Temples are readily available. About the price is your call, $750 seems very high(I don't see EPBD even sale that high, and those seem to be the most coveted). Also I don't buy NOS since I am not a collector and it doesn't make sense to pay NOS price to shave with it. So if you are a collector maybe your price/value is different from mine.
    Btw, what is your plan? collect ? shave ? give a present ?. If it's shave, find a Doble Temple used that is being sold in the classifieds here or another shaving forum. Doble Temples are readily available, and shave as good as most fillies. The only different fillies are the Sub-Zero and EPBD(though I don't think they are better).

    Thank You gentlemen. I tend to agree, the price is very high and I have spent a substantial amount of money on straights lately. Time to pump the brakes.

    Thank You Gentlemen . My plan is to collect and shave . Its like buying fancy cars, sure you can say you have em but what fun is it if you dont take em for a spin. That price is a bit high to me as well but I've only just begun shaving/collecting. I have spent a substantial amount of cash recently on razors and as DLB said there will always be another.

    Btw, just as some research I've done on fillies, meant to post it sometime so here it is:
    Available Filarmonicas(sizes #12(5/8), #13(6/8), #14(8/8) unless specified there is also no "7/8"):

    * Corte de cabello: #10, #11
    * Doble temple
    ....* Imperial
    ....* Especial
    ....* Medallón taurino: banderillas, capote, estocada, rejoneo, cogida and muleta.(decorative)
    * Barbas duras: #13, #14 and Tridur(special superficial treatment of blade)
    * Subcero: Inject nigrogen in the (Temple and Revenidos) cycles. Doing so reduced the Revenidos cycles making production cheaper.
    * Novodur: Scales made of Tiovodur(material introduced by bayer in 1975)
    * Inoxidable: #13

    This are in order of pricing(as was sold in stores). Doble Temples were sold for around 1500 Pesetas. The Imperial, especial and medallon taurino where not part of the standard filarmonica line, but simply made as commemorative.
    On stores(coming from someone who bought this in the 1960's) you would find Doble Temples, Barbas Duras, Sub Cero, Novodur and Inoxidables. The prices in that order, Inoxidables being the most expensive. Novodurs were apparently the Top of the line too. Sub Cero's were "the most recommended". Doble Temples were sold mainly to "Barbers". Barbas Duras was the "least recommended" for it's size(#14 was the commonly sold one). The most recommended size was the #13. Filarmonica later introduced the #13 Barbas Duras because of the demand for #13, and much later the Tridur.

    Thanks for your post dps. Very interesting reading, especially the historial aspect of perceived value of razor size and steel type.
    I would like to point out to everyone that I have noticed some sellers trying to "flog" the Filarmonica Corte de Cabello as a razor.
    They were not made for shaving. They were typically paired with a metal "comb" that fitted of the blade which was then used for thining the hair.
    The grind of these are very different to your typical hollow ground, not something I would want to use on my face. As the prices for these are
    cheaper than the others it might be tempting to buy it. I just felt the need to warn people.

    Cabello = hair (on your head)
    Barba = Beard
    Bigote = moustache
    Ceja = eyebrow (insider joke...many Spanish men trim their eyebrows - check out the football players if you dont believe me!)
