Help identifying razor
hey guys, was wondering what I have here, if it is a potential good shaver or junk?
It is in a box that just says Razor in script and Genuine in print under that, on the top of lid and inside. The razor has standard celluloid scales and is probably a 5/8" from looking at it. on one side it says 77 perpendicular to the spine, then CAPE and under that swedishsteel (all parallel to spine). other side parallesl to spine for barber's use first quality. Full hollow ground, appears unused.
I can't get good pics right now due to lighting but could try tomorrow. was wondering what this is and if worth having sharpened. got it from a buddy.

Thanked: 1587If you "hone your own" I'd just say go for it and see what happens. If you don't, maybe wait until someone who knows what these are comes along to help before you drop money on sending it out.
You make it sound like a new "old" razor. Is that true, or is it a new "new" razor? Where or how did you get hold of it?

I think it is a slightly old new razor, box seems worn, but I have no idea age. A buddy of my uncle's who I also know found it when he was in Oklahoma recently and picked it up for me, I don't know any details other than that yet because he just handed it off to my uncle for me. I don't hone my own, I only have barber's stone here somewhere and this probably needs a fresh bevel.

Sounds like a razor from the Japanese maker Tanifuji - they produced razors with the CAPE stamp up until the 70's I believe, as a reference to Cape Canaveral (?). As with all Japanese westerns, it should be a brilliant shaver. Congrats!

Thanks Faust I think you're right as I found one other reference to a CAPE razor by that company, this didn't have any Japanese name on it though so I wasn't sure. I'll send it off when I finally get mine out for honing and find out I guess.
Dwarven, sounds good, if I know a couple days in advance I can normally get out for a cigar or drinks. I usually pick up my daughters but my wife will do it if I ask her ahead. Except Tuesdays she has her own thing going. shoot me a pm or email we'll figure it out.
