Maxard 406?
I found a str8 today in a local pawn shop and just wanted some input on whether I'd be paying too much.
"Maxard 406" on one side of the shank
"Germany" on the opposite side
It was marked at $69.95 and I got them to come down to $45 otd
Very little tarnish on the blade and didn't look to be excessive honing or use to my non expert eye. Scales were in decent shape but slightly loose on the blade and wouldn't hold it up.
Just looking for input, thanks in advance.

Sorry, we don't allow valuations on SRP.
I am not familiar with the stamping on the razor except for the German part. That doesn't mean it is not a good razor though. I have several from Germany that I can't find info on but they give a good shave. In the end I would suggest that if you are comfortable with the price, go for it. If you are asking about it you may not be. Any razor is worth as much as you are willing to pay for it.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Thanks, I was just mainly wondering if anyone thought it was a fair price more so than an appraisal. I'm comfortable with the price for the shape it's in though. I had them put it back for me to go back and get tomorrow when I get paid early because of the holiday. Just wanted to know if anyone knew or had experienced shaving with one.

At $69.95, it should be in really fine shape. If not, I would definitely pass.

Thanked: 1371I am not familiar with the razor, so don't take this as a judgment on that particular one. (Also, as noted we don't do valuations for many reasons, one of which is that you are the only person that can decide if that razor is worth the price to you)
In general I don't pay more than $20 for a razor at an antique store; and for $20 it should be in pretty good shape. Most of my antique store purchases are in the $12-$15 range. Of course, your market might be different.
I assume that there is some variance in markets, because I see a lot of people excited about having bought something on eBay for $40 or more that I wouldn't pay $10 for locally.
In the end, if you feel like you got a good razor for the money, that's what counts.

Thanked: 6I just found this on a search of this forum, http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...ard-razor.html If it's anything like this razor its better than the average German or English and you may be getting a good deal, otherwise Id'e agree with HNSB on the $20 deal

I have this Maxard with a worked spine and red enamel highlights. It is a great shaver and holds a keen edge. I won't comment on the relative value of the razor you are interested in since I am tightwad and have never spent more than $35 for a razor. I guess the determining factor is; What is it worth to you? My Maxard appears to be of equal or better quality of the lower end Dovos.

Ended up picking it up for $35 so I'm pretty pleased with it and just thought I'd share
