Would it be reasonable?
I saw a nice looking straight razor in an antique shop today. It has no identifying markings save for something that might be a makers mark or something like that. It does not look like a standard razor out of some factory by looks like it might be hand made. My question is this: would it be worth buying a razor like this(the guy wants 100 bucks for it)? or would it be a waste of money? sorry no picture, he would not let me snap any in the shop.

The fact that he wouldn't let you take a picture is a red flag for me! But maybe that's just me.

Thanked: 66I don't see your location in your profile, but I can tell you 100$ is too much for a razor you don't know anything about, you can get a shave ready from the classified on this forum for less, or get a new dovo.
I usually won't pay more than 20$ for a razor at the antique stores around my area. And most razors at these antique dealers usually sell them for 10$-30$ For about any kind they have.. Of course some dealers will have some rusted up razor for 100$ but they will never sell it for that price.

Thanked: 1195The problem is that nowadays information is so readily available that antique sellers are wisening up to the fact that straight razors can be a valuable commodity to a niche crowd - especiay if there are any SRP members in the area buying everything up within the area/zip code . Chances are if you are not wiling to pay $100 someone else will, so the seller won't lower the price knowing he'll get what he wants. That being said there are still some ignorant seers out there that have no idea what peope are willing to pay for "junk" razors.
What you are willing to pay is entirely up to you. But I would recommend doing some research and know what to look for before buying an antique store special for $100.

Razors like that are best left for purchase to someone who is well versed in razors or can identify the makers mark. Otherwise you have no idea what you are getting and it's not exactly a 10 buck razor.

In short; NO! That's a lot for an old razor you'll have to fettle.

Yeah, what thebigspendur said. If you don't know and $100 is too much money to loose find something else. It may well be a custom razor worth $1000, and you'd be missing a killer deal, but as there is no way for you or any of us to know, you'll have to treat it as a simple $100 gamble. Only you know whether that's something you want to do or not.
