Thanked: 1HELP!!
Hi, I went to a Collectables fair today here in Melbourne and ended up buying a straight razor for my son for Christmas. It looks as though it has a bakelite handle with either end capped off with either silver or steel. On one side of the handle it says, BISMARCK SOLINGEN. On one side of the blade it say, Krosskeys and on the other it says, J.NOWILL & SONS then SHEFFIELD and it has 2xkeys crossed and EST written under them. On the blade it says _______ MADE AND GROUND, the first word is hard to read.
I am hoping that someone can help me date it?
Thanks everyone!

Hello
The handle is not of this razor.
I think that this razor made before 1891 because there is no labels "England"
About the manufacturer:
John NOWILL & SONS, Nowill Cutlery Works, Sheffild 1842-1920. Cutlery and goods in other metals
Sincerely,

Replacement handle make quite often. The original handle was probably made of horn.
By dating the handle I can not help unfortunately .. I can only say that it is from the German razor.
As for cost ... if you placed pictures would be easier to answer the question.

We don't do valuations on SRP but you definitely have non original scales from a German razor.
Old Sheffield razors may have had bone, horn or ivory scales & I think Nowills were still making knives up till 2009 at least but razor manufacture stopped some time ago as per Fierce30rus' post
Do you have any pics ? I had a small Nowill razor that gave an impressive shave.Last edited by onimaru55; 12-10-2011 at 11:40 AM.

If you have a photo saved on your computer, then reply to the thread, click the "go advanced" button, then click on the paperclip to attach an image, upload your picture and then hit submit. That should just about do it. I think.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

I have a Nowill 6/8 wedge in the workshop ready for restoration ATM.
It looks like it has never been used.
IIRC there is a thread somewhere with photos of just such a razor.
Here is the link - http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...eld-wedge.html
And here is the link to some more information on the razor - http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...days-find.html
We love manah.
To upload photos you need to 'go advanced' (below the 'reply' text box), scroll down and follow the instructions.
I hope this helps.
I wish there was those type of fairs in BrisbaneHang on and enjoy the ride...

Thanked: 983For Os: J.Adams LTD has the rights to use the name of J.Nowill and Sons these days. So you will still see Nowill knives being made today.
For Geoff: We do mate, they incorporate that sort of thing into the Brisbane Gun shows. It's mostly knives that you will find, but there are some treasures to be found as well. It's all luck of the draw.
