Thread: rust on carbon razor

I have a carbon razor and it had a few rust spots. I think I found teh reaso why.When I shave the handle gets damp I wip as needed. However at the end of the shave I dip the closed razor into the water to rinse it off. After I wipe and clean it and apply a dab of alcohol along the blade. I close the blade and set in down the razor down. This time I waited awhile and opened up the blade for a look see. And what I saw was dew on the front end both sides. What I think is happening is the handle is moist on the inside causing condensation. The warm moisture of the handle moves to the cooler blade edge.

What I'll do for now on is leave the edge open on the shelf and let air dry after cleaning. I hope this will be of help to all..nick

You outlined the problem, and here are a few solutions:
1) Don't make your lather too watery. Just enough to stay moist throughout the pass.
2) If it's a hollow grind in the 5/8-6/8 range, rinse it out 4 times per pass. More often if it's a wedge.
3) Avoid getting the scales wet and if you do, wipe them dry and let them air-dry for a bit before closing the blade.
4) Only clean inside the scales when you hone, use alcohol and keep the blade open until it evaporates.

Get yourself a wooden cigar box it seems to absorb the moisture

I've had that problem too. Initially I used my wife's hair dryer to get rid of the moisture in the scales. Nowadays I just do as you suggest, leave the razor open to dry out.

Wip down the razor with tissue. Use canned air if you have it to blow it everywhere. Get a Japanese camellia oil applicator, but fill it with Ballistol. Wip the blade with Ballistol then wip it again with tissue to evenly spread a thin coat. Then leave the razor open as you are already doing. Good Luck! Don't forget to wip it off before you strop.

Wasn't that the show with Darren McGavin, The Night Stalker, man that show used to scare the crap out of me, and there was the Zombie episode, where he had to put salt in the zombie's mouth and sew it shut...shame that doesn't work on our wives...sorry..I mean for the zombie's on the walking dead...

Kolchak the Night Stalker? They tried to revive it a few years back but it only lasted 1 season I think.
