Thread: Collecting Book

Hi All-

I've been using ebay extensively, but I don't know what to look for in collectible razors. I let a Puma go by, with a "buy it now" price, and it ended up selling for about $400. I didn't know anything about this brand.

To avoid future missed opportunities, I'm looking for a good collecting book or two, one that preferably covers history, manufacturers, etc. There is one book I found on Amazon, but its publication date was 1980, and I'm sure razor companies have come and gone since then.

Can anyone give me a lead?

I am also interested in that even though it's more from a point of academic interest in my case.

I too would like a book recommendation; not so much for collecting values as the history and development of the straight razor, and its various iterations.

Any Suggestions?

I know this isn't exactly what you're after, but I've found this site interesting with regards manufacturers and dates:

They also have a small number of references to other sources, but I've never followed them up.

I have the "Standard Guide to Razors Second Edition" - Ritchie & Stewart. It's out of print but you can get it on ebay. I got mine from c.cody. I won it for $18.10. Good pics and prices that are old but they will give you a comparative idea.

The best book on the value of razors is Ebay! Look at the completed sales for several months and you will have an accurate indication of value. You will also realize that this is one finicky/trendy market.
None of the actual books are useful to determine valuation or collectability.


Just my two cents,

I own two books that I purchased while in the USA and I have to agree with Randy on the state of the market, well ebay anyway.

All I have found these books good for is identification of various models and found it in no way helpful at all for gauging value.

The Standard Guide to razors is supposed to be for calculating value, i havent worked it out as its an individual thing.
The other is a book called 1000 razors, its great for looking at ones youve never heard of.

At the end of the day the price is whatever your willing to pay.

Just my opinion and feel free to disagree with me.
