I think everyone will tell you the best bang for the buck is with a vintage and starting out you're better with a vintage in case you damage it or decide this is not for you. My first straight was a TI 6/8s and looking back I should have gotten a vintage but of course I didn't know jack then.

Having said all this I do have to say there is something about getting a brand spanking new razor. It just makes you feel good all over.

My first razor was marked "Solingen" and purchased new at an Army/Navy store in Boulder, CO in 1981. It wasn't shave ready, but that was before this great resource (SRP) and I didn't know any better. It didn't work and I gave up. By the time I came back around to it, it was 28 years later and had turned "vintage" . So, I guess all my razors are vintage. (If you don't include that one, all but one.)
As others have written, it is up to you, but you can hardly go wrong buying from the classifieds here.
Good luck and make it fun!

+1 on the above advice . Better to start cheap and be sure you are in for the long run , with straight razors !

Check manah's ads. I just got one vintage razor from him for next to nothing (including delivery!!!!) shave ready and it shaves really well. Good luck!
