Thanked: 4Spike's are great at trimming all those areas that you want great precision, but they do take a little getting used to.
I normally just make sure I watch the spike at all times.
You may want to try lightly dulling that last little point of the razor, getting used to shaving with it like that, still minding the tip and then next time you hone, get the spike sharp and go from there, with some expeirence under you belt with that specific razor.
Only time I have had the spike catch is when i put uneven pressure across the blade and the blade presses into the skin. But that is just bad shaving forum, so if you mind the blade you should be fine.
They look mean too

When I was first looking for my first straight razor almost a year and a half ago I was insistent that it be a round point for the same concerns you raise. Although I ordered a rounded tip first, it turned out that a spike arrived first. Since I had my Norton already by then I just went at it. Now I'm wondering if I'll ever be as happy using a round point as I am with my spikes. It gets into all the tight corners superbly well, and I have never had any issue with the tip at all. Any 'needle' at the point is easily taken care of with a few ultra gentle passes over the the edge of the hone. I'm still trying to talk myself into accepting a round point.

Randy,
I have round points, spikes and barber notch razors and It doesn't seen to make any difference to me in regards to nicks. The only time I nick myself is due to inatention and usualy with the heel of the blade.
