Thanked: 0Enormous Monster Mystery Razor - 10/8, made by someone??
Picked this up at an estate sale, paid almost nothing. I couldn't find anything else like it online. At first I thought it was a microtome, but I read that those are almost all ground flat on one side, and this one is hollow on both sides. No marks at all. The scale was cut from a block of aluminum and shaped by hand, the blade too, it almost doesn't look like a blank because there are sanding marks all over it, like it was made by hand.
My thoughts are that it was maybe made by someone in a machine shop, perhaps to demonstrate their skills. Only problem with that is the case, and the fact that it fits inside perfectly, literally PERFECTLY. Someone said it might be an eyeglass case it but I think its too large.
My other guess was that it could be a veterinarian's tool to shave large animals for surgery, which might explain the case. So, what are your guys' thoughts? Ever seen anything like it before?

If the blade was made from aluminum it probably will not make a good razor. Maybe more of a show piece. I don't thing aluminum has good properties for razor use. I have never seen any knife made from it actually.
However I'm no metals expert. I'm sure Mike Blue or some of the others will chime in with some real expert opinions. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Paul Bunyan called...he wants his razor back! Wow,that thing is huge!Do you get tired using it?SInce the blade had the rust on it its definitely not aluminum or stainless.Must be some sort of carbon steel if it holds a good edge. But you would expect a long neglected carbon blade to be darker than that.Whatever it IS,I know what it ain't...typical.And that makes it so very coolGlad you found it and gave it a good home.If it could only talk...
OH,the case.Is it lined with anything. If it is just plain leather inside than it is not an old eyeglass case.Plain leather with no liner would scratch your lenses and wouldn't have been used. Your vet theory seems pretty plausible to me.Last edited by shinyribs; 01-27-2012 at 06:57 PM.

I could have sworn I saw a thread about this exact same razor some time ago. IMO, it looks like it was custom made.
