which new 6/8 razor should I buy for shaving purposes?
Good evening,
I have been shaving with 2 vintage hollow ground 5/8 straight razors (boker red injun and another german) and also a 5/8 half hollow dovo best quality razor. I like the dovo one because it is heftier. Now I am thinking that I should get a 6/8 razor because I want a bigger razor. I need the razor for shaving mainly, so no need for expensive and exotic scales or fancy gold etchings.
I have already singled out a few choices, please help me decide:
1-dovo best quality 6/8 half hollow
2-Timor Hamburg ring 6/8
3- Thiers issard Evide Sonnant Extra 6/8
4-dovo special 6/8
5- TI hiers-Issard Sheffield Silver Steel (this is stretching the budget)
Thank you very much for your help.
Thanks
Dan

Thanked: 12I purchased a 6/8 half hollow Dovo best quality from Royal Shave. the actual width is 13/16. I own about 20 razors and every single one is a good shaver, but I can honestly say this one is my best shaver. And the price is right. IMO you could go wrong with this one.

Thanked: 983I would suggest a 6/8 as a minimum for shaving purposes, if you want something to do a bit of hole digging for fence post etc go for something like an 8/8 or bigger. For scratching an itch with precision, in a hard to reach spot try a 3/8.
All jokes aside, for quality at a low cost, I would recommend the Timor. I have a Timor in 5/8, and it is a damn fine shaver, and very highly under rated here on SRP unfortunately. Timor also make some blades for Dovo, so they are pretty much the same razor in that regard.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I would love to buy from royal shave but those guys don't ship to Canada.
@ Tsunami: . hehe by shaving purposes I meant the blade is really important not the horn handle or decorated spine etc. I could not understand your last sentence. which one did you recommend again?

Thanked: 96Whats wrong with a vintage 6/8? I have bought a few new razors, a few vintage razors and as hard as I try I cant tell the difference. The only reason I bring this up is you could get a higher quality vintage for cheaper than a new one and the classifieds here usually have quite the selection. I prefer the 5/8, a 6/8 or bigger seems too big for me, but to each his own.

Thanked: 796/8 and up definitely works better for me than 5/8. My very nice Dovo 5/8s are mostly remanded to the box with a coat of oil these days...
I own a Dovo Maestro - different finish and spinework on the same blade as the Special and Best Quality - that's my favorite shaver these days, immediately followed by the Evide Sonnant. If I could get only one for daily shaving, it would be a Dovo - but then I don't know the Timor (yet!).Last edited by HamburgO; 02-02-2012 at 06:42 AM.
