The 3,000,000th "identify this razor" thread

I picked up 2 razors in an auction on ebay...$15 for the pair. I wanted them to practice with when I get my Norton hone. One is an Ontario Cutlery razor, and it's FANTASTIC! A little rust but it looks like I could shave with it now.

The other one was listed as "unmarked" but I noticed it wasn't the case. I rubbed off a little rust with a metal scrub pad and found a "45" stamped there on the tang. I tried to Google it and search here to no avail. No other markings, just "45." It's a square point, 5/8 (i think), 1/2 hollow. No pics at the moment, but it's really just a plain, generic-looking razor with a 45 on the side. Scales are plain black plastic...they looked a little small, if that matters.

Anyone ever seen one?

I was trying to get the pic off of ebay but I can't. Maybe I'll take some pics of them tomorrow, but there's really nothing at all visually exciting about them.

The mysterious "45" razor is probably junk. It's pretty rusty and the pitting goes all the way to the edge. It will be a good razor for me to practice my first-time-honing skills on, so for that I'm pretty happy.

The Ontario, on closer inspection, will require some work. It was some pitting close to the edge, but it doesn't appear as though it will be a problem. I will probably need to handsand it a bit. The bigger issue is that it's going to need new scales. It's poorly scaled now; the pins aren't centered and a small portion of the blade sticks out the other end of the scales. The scales seem mismatched too. But I really like the blade and I think it can be cleaned up and used.

I don't have the resources to make scales. One day, I'd love to. But for now, I don't. Does anyone have experience with the scales from The Superior Shave? They have some wooden scales that look nice and will probably fit this razor. I can see that being a way for me to go somewhere down the line. I've also been scouring ebay for a trashed blade with decent looking scales on them but I haven't seen anything I liked.

Anyway, it's nice to have a hobby like this again!

Yah... without pics I don't think you'll get any traction on that ID request.

It's pretty much like asking "I have this here car that I bought at a blind auction and it has a letter on the trunk cover, it's like a 'P', and I'm trying to figure out what it is." Even the best intentioned samaritan couldn't tell you if you had a Porsche, a Pontiac, a VW Passat or a Peugeot.

I know I know. I just haven't had time to properly get the rust and dirt cleaned away so you could see the tang stamp properly. I finally did it last night, so I can post a pic when I get home, assuming I can get a clear shot of it. I'll do my bestest.

Ok here be some shots. They're from my phone but they came out ok.

First up, the Mysterious 45...I started honing it on the Norton, if it looks bad it was my first time so go easy. It got remarkably clean from the slurry, and I think once I figure out how to hone it properly, and assuming I haven't ruined it, I'm going to put handsand it, put on some new scales and re-hone. The current scales seem to have something wrong with the pivot as the razor moves laterally. Perhaps the hole in the razor is not circular? Also, the plastic is particularly flimsy and I just don't like them at all.

Sooo, any ideas of what this thing might be?



And second is the Ontario Cutlery. It's going to clean up REALLY well, and again it needs new scales. These scales are uneven and the pivot is not centered, which makes part of the edge stick out the other end when it's closed. Again, flimsy black plastic...and it has a small crack in the scales, so they definitely need to go.

I'm pretty pleased. I spent $20 for both of them combined, including shipping, expecting to have some junk to practice on and I think I'll end up with 2 nice razors.

cant help to indentify but I just wanted to say that I love that ontario one...very nice find! let us know how your honing goes with them

The Ontario Cutlery one is a good one; I have a couple and they are nice shavers. Can't speak to the other one, but it looks nice enough and I gather that once honed should be a serviceable one.
