About the best way I can think of to describe a frameback is that it is a full hollow wedge. Quite a wonderful thing. I currently only have a Heljestrand frameback and it is by far one of my favorite shavers.

Framebacks are made in two ways. In one type, the blade is integral to the tang and the frame, or spine, is slid over the spine of the blade. The tang on these is very thin and the razor is usually very light. In another type, the tang and spine are integral and the blade is pressed up into the spine. The tang is thicker on these and they are usually heavier. Some of this type even have interchangable blades! I feel the benefits of these is easy honing and maintenance as well as great feedback when shaving. Just a different means to an end, really. They are usually very attractive razors as well. I have a few of both types and really look forward to them coming up in rotation! Here are 2 examples. The top one being the first type and the bottom is the 2nd type

I have a Wostenholm and a Heljestrand frameback and they are a pleasure to hone and shave with. I like my wedges, but the framebacks are very light, easy to strop and they are very comfortable and easy to manipulate when shaving.

Framebacks are really their own special type razor. I'm not sure you can characterize them as the typical grinds we see. I have a couple and they are great shavers.
