Question Do you think this is worth restoring?

My mother-in-law gave me this Ern Grand Prize St. Louis 1904 razor. I like that it's old and the edge doesn't look too bad, but it obviously has some rust issues. I've never heard of Ern razors before, and I couldn't find much online. Is it any good and do you think it's worth restoring?

Ern razors are nice shavers. Rust on the tang is quite easy to manage. However, that frosting on the blade is very delicate, so trying to clean up the front of the blade would most likely remove that.

Personally, I would clean up the stuff off the frosting, leave whatever's on the frosting as it is (but keep an eye on it), and get her honed up.

Erns are really great shavers and you've got a fairly nice one there. The question is do YOU think it's worth restoring? Would you be sending it out to be done or doing it yourself? I do my own restores and to me that one could be turned into a fine looking shaver

Yes, well worth restoring. If it comes from within family, doubly so. As said, ERNs are great shavers.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I could do some of it myself, although I'm 99.9% sure I would send it out for honing.

Just got them on the mail today, better then anything I could have done as a first time restorer ( worked on wood before). 100% satisfied with the restoration and the price!

Definitely worth restoring. +1 on trying to preserve the frosting.

I recommend micro mesh pads for the blade, get a combo pack and it will take you from 1500 to 12000 and you will have a nice finish, or some autosol(?) it's a German metal paste designed for removing rust and preserving steel

removing rust and preserving steel? as in it might be used on a rusted/frosted piece of metal?

I'd clean up the tang and the rear of the blade but I'd leave the front with the frosting. ERN's are a quality straight so get it honed and use it.
