    Default Praising the Duck!

I shaved with a Dubl Duck for the first time this morning, and WOW!!! that's one of the smoothest, sharpest edges that I've experienced yet! Now I know why they're so darned expensive on eBay. What's more is it's actually an edge that I honed myself. I don't know if it's just good steel or that my honing skills are progressing (probably a little bit of both), but I'm definitely impressed with it's shaving qualities. I think I'm coming down with DDAD.... oh noes!

Yeah you don't want to do the DD AD LOL

Personally I think Thebigspendur and I have said it enough, but IMO DD"s are the most consistent brand of razor, I have never had a "Bad" one unless there is actual damage, they hone up very easy and shave a dream...
Some time back I actual said if you want to learn how to hone get a DD and hone it that of course was back when you could still find the #1 and SatinEdge for less then $50 in really good shape ...

I really wish I was around when they were that cheap. My visa card is gonna slap me when I finally take the plunge for a restored DD

Think of it this way, everything is relative. In 10 years today's prices will look cheap.

Yes, DD's are at the top of the food chain as far as great shavers are concerned. However, I would think twice about buying a restored one unless you know that it was restored by a pro. Bad things can happen in the restoration process. The worst of which is temper loss due to sloppy buffing. Unless a preson really knows what they are doing it is easy for the blade to get to hot during buffing and polishing.
Instead, you might want to look for one in excellent original condition. Unless you have to have a Lifetime or a Wonderedge, they are not rare at all. Pricy, yes, but not rare. JMHO Very Best, John

I found that DDs are good razors, but not head and shoulders above everything else. They are simply a quality vintage German razor.

They have achieved a cult like status though.

Twenty five, thirty years ago, when I used to go to various barber shops trying to buy the old barber's razors, the majority of them favored the duck. I also had some say that FWE was equal. One guy told me that he preferred Solingen razors but Sheffields were fine too. I think they liked them because between the hollow grind and the quality of the steel they were not difficult to hone or to maintain a shave ready edge. BTW, back then they were relatively inexpensive.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I also was fortunate to began this journey "back in the day". I have a number of FWE, Bokers, Henckels, and many others that I paid $5-$10 for in excellent condtion. Long gone are those days!!!!!!!! Very Best and Happy Shaving, John

Actually Bresnick and then Pearlson had a platoon of salesmen who were very aggressive about visiting barber shops on a regular basis and sold their wares door to door so to speak and gave the Barbers attractive terms. Many of the customers came in to the shops and asked what razors the barbers preferred and the Duck came up a lot and then the customer base got hooked on them plus the salesmen were good honers and would hone the razors for the shops and the customers. That's how it really started.

Great service and customer loyalty and of course a great product.

    ....snip....
I have picked up a weeks rotation of ducks over the last two years. None were more than $35.
They are all different but good shavers all.

The differences run from just a good razor to OMG that was a fine shave.
My best duck and my best modern Dovo are neck and neck...

And yep honing skills play a big part.

Enjoy the ride it is all good.
