Default Dovo 105 Gold Plating Removal

    Hi All
Has anyone either intentionally or unintentionally removed the gold etching from a Dovo 105 as pictured? I am sure the razor would look better without the gold plating, but only if the etching pattern was present underneath. What are your thoughts?

I have two of the same, in one of them the gold edging is not very "goldie"on one of the edges and you can see trough a faint pattern of the razor. I think once removed ( with care) it will show the zebra pattern, like I call it. I'm in the same thought as you, I think it will look good without the gold plating too. However, I don't mind the gold edging that much to risk having to restore the whole blade because of a mishandling of the removal. Double O

P.S. I'll try to take a picture and post at a later day!

I have unintentionally stripped gold-plating off a Filarmonica (ouch!!) with MAAS metal polisher. It comes out in a flash.

I apologize, after closer examination it doesn't look like there is anything on the back of the edging. It looks like clean metal. Must have been my eyes that fool me with all the zebra pattern. Again my apologies Double O

Removal is easy. Retaining when cleaning is hard. Any metal polish will remove the goldwash. Heck, you could rub it w/ your thumb and remove it, but polish will be faster.

The etch remains when the gold disappears. Autosol or any metal polish will remove it but some gold washes are more resilient than others.

Thanks guys for your answers. I am in the same boat as Double 0, as mine has a faded dull appearance on the complete right side. Prefer to keep it the gold, but inevitably it will go with time (or another careless cleaning session). Dovo must have changed the etching under the gold at some stage, as I noticed a difference in posts as to whether the etching would be there or not after the gold goes. Never a dull moment in shaving :0

    Hey there

I removed the gold plating on a Eugen Haering razor, the lettering was etched underneath and is still there to be seen rather prominently.

I don't mean to derail this thread but is removing the gold plating a popular practice? I'm new to straight razors (and actually don't own one yet) and thought that people would want to preserve the gold. I myself don't really like it and would prefer a plain blade but I thought that I was the exception.

i don't know if removal is a popular practice. given time and usage it will slowly wear away and at some point you just have to decide that it is time for it to go completely. plain steel is what a razor needs... all the gold wash is for the collectors who never shave with a razor. JMHO.

    enjoy,
