Thanked: 4Hello and a Question
I wanted to say hello and ask a question about a razor that I just bought. I’m new to the site, but not new to the straight razor. I was taught by my great grandfather how to shave with a straight razor and shave with the one he gave me at least once a month to keep in practice. However, that one is starting to show its age since it was apparently his grandfather’s, so I went looking for one to use in place of it.
Now for my question. I was wondering through one of the local flea markets this weekend and came across this one; the box says “Sigmund Hollinger’s Special”. On the lid is printed “Price $3.00”. Now I know that I didn’t get hurt by paying the guy my 12 bucks, but my question is just how well did I do?
He also has a “Sheffield of England” that I’m going back for this weekend. I’m not really sure that he knows what he has in that one.

Thanked: 94If your happy with it you did good, if not you did poorly! lol
seriously though, If the edge is not pitted and the hone wear is minimal, I am sure you did fine.

Thanked: 4@alb… the hone ware does appear to be a minimum but there is just enough pitting on the edge that I’ll probably send it out to be honed for the first time. Probably someone like Classic Shaving, but I’m open to other suggestions. There’s not anyone in my area that I’m aware of that I would want to take a chance on yet. I’ve hit a point with Papa’s razor and the stones where it’s definitely time to retire them. So, not only do I need to replace the razor, but I need to find new stones as well. My shopping around is how I found this site. The razor that I bought was worth it to me. I was just kinda curious if it was one of “those” finds. As for a replacement razor, I’m leaning towards one from Hart Steel.

Thanked: 4Lol… I know the feeling well. I’ve been saving my pennies religiously for this for awhile. Seriously. Have a 5 gallon water cooler jug full; just for this.
