Default first nice razor stainless or carbon?

my father in law has decided to pay for my first nice razor, up to three hundred dollars!!!! i see alot of nice dovos in the 200 range and one in particular that has olive wood scales, but it is stainless. what is better for a starter razor, stainless or carbon steel And why? all advice is appreciated as are opinions.

In my experience, you can't go wrong with either. Both Stainless and Carbon Dovo's shave nicely and hone up without problems usually. I would pick the one you like the looks of the best and have some fun.

Make sure you thank your father in law!!

That is very generous of him! If I were you I would probably get one of the ~$300 Thiers-Issard razors. I know this doesn't answer the question you were asking but I guess I just got excited at the idea that you are able to pick out a razor in the price range I can only dream about. Let us know what you end up picking!

he says up to 300 but im finding alot i like in the 200$ range such as the dovo blackstar with pakkawood scales(purple). hart steel looks good but im thinking you may just be paying for the "made in the USA" concept instead of off-shore

I like the Thiers-Issard for looks, and I like the Hart razors for the shear brut look. Different ends of the spectrum. For me personally, one of the Hart 7/8" will be my first new purchase.

As was already said, I think you'll be happy with any of them. Just make sure it's shave ready!

Personally I would be scouring the forums and ebay for a beautiful vintage blade, either NOS or restored.

Are there particular makers you would recommend looking out for Proinsias?

    decided on this
DOVO Black Star 5/8 Straight Razor

love the scales, the blackened spine and tang and its ability to fight water marks. and the blade saying "blackstar" is just awsome
