    Default Soligen questions

I picked up a razor marked Soligen Razor Co., Germany. On the blade it says "Excelsior" and there's an embossed Eagle on the handle, which appears to be plastic. (It's actually a one-pin handle; the scales are fused together where the wedge normally would be.)

I was under the impression that Soligen was a brand of steel, not a specific company. Is it both a type of steel and a brand of razor?

Does anyone know anything about this razor? It was only $4.95, and it seems like it'll be a good shaver regardless.

    Thanks,
    Josh

Solingen is a PLACE not anything else. And it's possible that at one time there was a company called: "Solingen Razor company".

Solingen is the place in germany where most of the steel processing plants are. So you're both right and wrong at the same time.

Alex is spot on, as usual. In my str8 collecting, I have often found boxes, scales, and even tangs marked just "Solingen" and "Germany". These were usually on the lower end razors, produced either for a barber supply company or for a large retail outlet in the US. I've found that the steel used in these can be of lesser quality, but if in serviceable condition, can still be turned into fine shavers.

Solingen is the town, but I get the impression it says on your razor Soligen, which is one "n" less. Or am I wrong?.

    Kees,

I was a little sleepy when I was typing that last night, and I might have left off the N. I'll have to check tonight.

OK, so I looked at my razor, and it definitely says Solingen. I misspelled it last night. Twice. Sigh.

(Can you guess what I do for a living? I'm an editor. Seriously.)
