Thread: Horn scales?

I recentlyk bought a set of Thiers Issard razors which were said to have horn scales. They scales flex similar to plastic scales. Is there a way for me to know if these are not horn scales and I was misled?

Was it a rams horn razor?
If you have any pics that would help. I have TI rams horn and I don't think you could easily make a plastic one to replicate what I see and feel.


Edit: Those (blond horns?) sure do look mighty fine. I don't have those myself, so I can't tell if they are genuine, but I can tell you that my ram's horn flexes. I wish there are some non-destructive way of testing if it is the real deal and I'm sure others will chime in. Good luck!

Hot pin test.

Heat a pin red hot and apply to a part of the scale that doesn't show. Smoke that smells like burning hair is horn.

Pretty clever if they can put a grain like that into plastic.

I'm pretty sure that Thiers-Issard razors sport true horn scales.
Besides being beautiful horn scales seem appropriate, since as Wullie implies
horn is actually formed of keratin and is a modified type of hair.

Def horn! TI wouldn't make fake horn scales. In fact the 'plastic' like nature of horn is one of its finest attributes

Horn is known as the 'first thermoplastic' - why? - because it behaves like a plastic.
