    Default Those of you with gold on your blades...

    Does it come off over time?

    Good question! I was wondering the same. I bought a new razor, this time it was with gold etching on the blade, spine and tang - Dovo Bismarc. I was wondering if the gold will wear off over time, but then I looked at the pictures of older Dovo Bismarc str8 and noticed only slight wear, mainly on the tang. At the end, I decided to go for it. Even if it wears off, those will be just character marks that will hold memories...

    It will rub off slightly. It wont come off fast or anything as long as nothing but lather and water touches the blades. But if you use and cleaners or polish consider it gone!!!

    Yes it will come off over time just from you wiping lather, slurry, or water off of it. Depending on how gentle you are handling it, I wouldn't worry about completely removing it in your lifetime.

    You can minimise the loss (if you care about the goldwash staying on, that is) by being very very careful with it. Things you should (and shouldn't) do:

    • keep it out of the light;
    • avoid contact with the skin (salt);
    • avoid it coming into contact with lather;
    • avoid rubbing on leather or linen or canvas or balsa or newspaper or... you know what? Just don't rub it on anything;
    • touching it with ungloved hands is definitely not recommended;
    • never allow it to come into contact with fresh air;
    • under no circumstances should it be removed from its case.

    These are just the basic guidelines to caring for goldwashed razors. Obviously they only scratch the surface and you should take all necessary precautions to protect your investment.

    I have a 7 month old Bismarck, I use it almost every day.
    The gold has started to wear a little bit, especially on the tang where I 'roll' it between my thumb and finger while stropping.
    The spine has held up well, and the gold on the blade still looks fairly fresh, even after I polished the blade with "Silvo".

    If you would like, I will post some pics.

    Haha Jimbo that was awesome! ironsidegnr, I think your description is enough to get an idea, the Bismark is heavily golded, at least some of them if I'm not mistaken.

    I've got a Bismarck that I've used hundreds of times over the last few years and treat it just like every other razor and the goldwash is just fine. I suppose it'll take a LONG time for the razor to start looking 'bad'.
