Thanked: 884Hamburg Ring?
Just curious as to the name.
I have two 6/8's from two different Mf'rs and both have "Hamburg Ring" in the blade etch. Both are German. One rings, the other doesn't.
Have seen pics of other mf'rs razors with the same name etched on them.
Is there a story here?
Simple mind wants to know.

Thanked: 2591one of the theories, IIRC, was that it is a method of grinding. The other theory I have seen was about manufacturers in a group that branded the blades with Hamburg Ring. I think there is no definitive answer as to what it means.

The term Hamburg Ring I am just not sure where it comes from, I thought the shops around Hamburg for a bit, but many of the razors that are stamped are not from Hamburg

If they are Sheffield steel with German grinding, sold by Englishmen, I think this is the definition of "Hamburg Ring". Always good !

Thanked: 884Well they're both "double hollow" ground but not to the extent mentioned in Mr Korn's patent.
One is a GOTTA 120 and the other is UDAHL 71.
They both state being ground in Germany, but the Gotta states
"Finest Sheffield Steel
Forged and real Hollow
Ground in Germany"
Maybe Germany's try at a buzz word like the English used "CELEBRATED"?

NOTHING is double ground to Mr. Korn's patent, except his and Cattauraugus (same)..One thing's for sure! Your razors were ground with 2 stones, whether you can see it or not. Far, far from New York. You will throw rocks at those old wedges!

The one Hamburg Ring I've got I picked up for $5. It had hideous, hideous cell-rot, but because of the double grind it had a teeny, tiny bit of belly I suspected could offer up usable steel. It was true.
Ugliest razor I own, but it shaves pretty well! My current plan is to get some vile-green acrylic blanks from Masecraft and then make a brass inlay for them that says, in fancy script 'CELL ROT', then use that as my main travel razor.
