Default Feather Artist Club SS.......First shave & I'm Impressed!

Well, having only used straights (Mastro Livi Regrind and a Ragg) for the past several years, I took the plunge and bought the Feather Artist Club SS, and all I can say is I'm impressed, very impressed!!!

I did consider the RG or DX some time ago, but was put off by people who had said they were too sharp or too aggressive. Certainly, from my first shave experience, I have found the SS to be neither of these when fitted with the pro guard blades. I did just 2 passes, one WTG and one ATG. The result was very, very near BBS, and without any injuries or irritation.

If you have always wondered about the Feather Artist Club I would suggest giving this one a go. It's nicely put together and does exactly what it says on the tin. It's also stainless steel and considerably less expensive than the DX.

Recommendation: If you are considering an SS, and you are an experienced user of straight razors, I would suggest giving the pro guards a miss. Go for another derivative of the pro blades or perhaps the professional blades.........you'll get a closer shave with less effort and more blades to the $/£.

I've considered the Feather for a few years now, but always found the price very prohibitive. Every time I try to justify it I find myself thinking of how many real straights I could buy with the same coin.....

Well if you've never owned a Feather AC - SS then the difference between a Feather and a cheap shavette is like trying to compare a Gold Dollar straight razor to a top notch Filarmonica, they are light years apart in quality and shaving.

If I had known you were interested in trying one I would have let you use mine. However, a friend of mine I mentored now owns it as he loves the shave from a Feather.

The shavette uses DE blades and the Feather uses their own proprietary blades. The Feather's weight is like that of a nice 6/8 wedge wrapped in a 5/8 body. Now add a disposable razor that is quite sharp and the Feather performs very well even with a week old beard. Some of us will say that after 2 shaves the blade dulls just enough to become comfortable but note that even with one pass (WTG) and you may not want to try any other passes. The Feather really does get that close.

When I use a Shavette I like to do a couple of passes (WTG and XTG) to get the same feeling as one pass (WTG) with the Feather. Also, the Feather is not as forgiving as a regular straight.

Last but not least, if you travel (airplane) the advantage of the Shavette and Feather is easier to pass through without the worries of your normal straight being damaged.

I hope that helps you and if I buy another one I'll be sure to send a PM so you can try it.

The new Feather AC-SS has a blade holder which is significantly different in profile to that of the old style Artist Club. Apparently this is supposed to make it less aggressive and more forgiving. Certainly, from my experience I found it to be a very comfortable shave.

Previously I have used the common arguments to discourage myself from making the purchase, but now wish I had splashed out sooner.
Of course it's a 'horses for courses' situation.

Well. I'm several days in with the Feather and at the risk of being labelled a heretic - these thing are truly amazing shavers!!!!

BBS is now a walk in the park.

I fully agree with you the Feather is a great shaver. They are great for new straight razor shavers and a real eye opener in terms of performance for an experienced shaver. I also don't view you as a heretic... not in the least bit.

A Dovo Shavette and the Feather isn't even remotely similar.
