Thread: 7/8 blade width?

I have been reading from various resources and it seems that there really is no "set" blade width for a beginner who wants to take up the hobby. However there are suggestions to begin with a 5/8 or even a 6/8 since it will be easier to determine if you want a wider or more narrow blade. I personally have started with a 5/8 and it feels awkward to me. I have had the opportunity to put a 13/16 in my hand and it feels "right", very comfortable. I have been surfing on several sites and have been looking at 6/8 and 7/8. My question is, do 7/8 have any real advantages other than aesthetics and ability to carry more cream? Also how maneuverable is a 7/8 with a Spanish point verses round? Would this be a good size for beginner? What would be a good 7/8 brand?

We recommend a 5/8 or 6/8s for a beginner because it's middle of the road and thus a good starting point however there is no such thing as a starter razor meaning size brand or style.

Razor size is a personal thing. Some like small and some like medium and some like big. personally, I find larger razors clumsy and harder to maneuver around my face. I find the large scales always get in the way. I don't think the point makes any difference. A spike can be more precision minded and require more care but the other types are just style.

For anyone just starting out with straight razors, 5/8 width would be a sensible choice. If you have a hairline mustache or a goatee, then maybe even 4/8 would be helpful for trimming around the corners.

Whatever width you choose, take your good old time while shaving. Relather several times if it is necessary - most of us do. It isn't a race to the finish. Enjoy it.....

I haven't used anything bigger than a 13/16, but the size of the blade I think will depend on how you shave. Not everyone shaves the same. I have a 4/8 that I shave differently with around my nose than I do with my 13/16, but they both shave as razors are supposed to. I find the bigger blades tend to need alittle more finesse in the tight spots, but that doesn't mean that they will shave any worse than a smaller blade. This is all just my opinion. In fact I have been looking to get a nice big chopper.

Just finding a 7/8 in a Spanish point may be a challenge, aside from a custom. Hell, finding a 7/8 in any profile is tough.

The only thing you MIGHT be able to find like that 'new' is one of the new grind Friodur's. Check Revisor too.

Thiers Issard makes new 7/8 razors. Not cheap, but available.
