Thread: Razor ID help needed

The original company - Forestier Freres - was one of the oldest and largest cutlery houses in Geneva, Switzerland. It opened a large showroom in 1832 in Tour de L'Ile, Geneva and soon had other outlets for its products (which eventually included such diverse items as clocks, watches and furniture):

Forestier a la Tour de L'Ile, Gevevre
Forestier a Grenelle
Forestier a Paris

It was taken over by Mr and Mrs Fontaine in 1931 (Fontaine & Cie) and they chose to concentrate on furniture.

I have only had two Swiss razors - I forget the name of one of them, but the other was by Jacques LeCoultre, from Berne. I remember him due to a bit of advertising from 1876 where he said he made "...Razors, manipulated from steel wire used for watch springs, and consequently of superior temper..."

Like most things Swiss, they were of very good quality, as I'm sure yours will be. Another well-regarded Swiss product was the Allegro strop, made in Lucerne if memory serves, a compact modular strop system, that often came bundled with a J A Henckels razor.

Now that's a beauty!

It could be a razor sold by a famous Swiss cutlery - I'm not certain in which country their razors were produced, nor do I have any info about the fabricant.

I got curious about this brand when I saw a specimen on this thread on the french forum: Forestier Genevois

Forestier was a cutlery, established in Tour de l'Île in Geneva, from 1832 to 1931. In 1931, the Fontaine family took over the shop under their name and specialized in tableware. The house Fontaine is still in activity today (they have a good selection of artisanal knives), but they don't have any archives about the 'Forestier' period anymore.
