Razor scale replacement..the old switcheroo.
Hi Guys,
Here for your amusement are a set of pictures of two razors that I have collected, though nothing special they have their faults: The blade on the hollow ground or round egde has dinks in its blade edge and as I do not have the tools to correct this issue I can not use it, the other razor the wedge is honed well and gives an excellent shave however its scales are a little thin and the blade is very loose on the pin resulting in a floppy set of scales when shaving.
My question is this: Is it possible for the blades to switched over so that out of the two razors I land up with a good one?
If this is possible who can do this sort of work?
OR
Would it be better to send my wedge away to be re-scaled?

The chips in the edge don't appear to be beyond repair - have you considered sending it to one of the honemeisters in the UK? Secondly, the loose scales can be be tightened up easily and again this is something that the same people could look after if you don't have the tools. If you don't like the scales then new ones could also be supplied. Look up Invisible Edge and The Strop Shop.

Keep in mind to an extent the scales need to be matched to the razor so you don't wind up with an ill fitting or an unbalanced razor. It depends on the size of the razors and the weight differences between the scales.

The problem is that at the moment I do not have too much money to throw at these two pieces and any honing/re-scaling is quite costly here, ive learned to Hone and I can hone a razor well but a knife better, but I cant shift the dinks out.
As to the scales: it was mentioned earlier about tightening? now I can live with the scales on the wedge if I can tighten them up.
I just want to say Thank you, you Guys always keep coming through with the advice and help, though new here I kinda feel like ive been here forever and thats all down to you. :-)

Take a look in the renovation wiki - this shows how to tighten scales - if you don't already have one you will need a 2 or 4oz ball pein hammer and a hard metal surface. It's worth the investment as I think loose scales can be dangerous on quite a few fronts.

If you're willing to send them to Norway send me a PM and I can fix up both razors as good as possible for you, just cover the shipping cost.
I might also have some scales in my pile that can fit.Last edited by Zephyr; 06-25-2012 at 04:20 PM. Reason: Added info

I believe that you could tighten the scales with a dessert spoon and a hard surface - and, of course, some care.
I'm sure someone here posted a thread about doing it that way
