Thread: ID a Cowboy

Hey gents - I got this blade off the bay a couple three days ago. Received it tonight. I don't quite think it's the 3/8's as advertised lol! The Filli in the photo is what I would call a 3/8.

I am not sure what i am going to do with it as it’s a bit too large for me lol - but can anyone help me ID it + tell me what size this would be considered!

Looks awful big and dangerous. I do have a pen for such beasts as that, and whip and chair to keep 'em line when they get rowdy.

Send it my way and I'll keep it out of trouble for you.

It's a neat one.

Looks like a 7/8". Would have gone for more money if listed that way. Why not relist it with correct description.

I bought it because I just loved the name! Cowboy. How cool is that lol?

I'll see what happens but if I do unload it - I'll keep you in mind. You know I HAVE to hone it up and give it at least one save first lol!

It would have gone for alot more listed that way! Moreover - I would never have bid lol!

Your Doble Temple Fili looks to have little or no hone wear, which from spine to tip measures 4/8 - I have yet to see an original 3/8 from Filarmonica.
From the scales I would date it as late 70s to early 80s ie late production before they closed.
If it has "Ice Tempered" etched on these blades they are stainless steel rather than carbon.

The spine work on your Cowboy reminds me of Solingen made razors.

Yeah the Fili was bought not that long ago as NOS - I know I honed it once... can't remember if I have honed it since. Hence, the little hone wear. Thanks for the info though.

Like I said - It's (the Fili) what "I" would call a 3/8 as it's thinner than any other 4/8 I have - by a long shot (as compared to Dovo 4/8's or Revisors 4/8 say). But I know that's what they called a 4/8 : ). Crazy isn't it lol! It's carbon.

Yeah, the Cowboy is the one I was wondering about - she's an odd one. Doesn't have a place of birth anywhere on her. Would have thought that were it German, they would have placed that on it for sure. But i am not sure lol. I hope you are right!

When you say that your Fili DT is "thinner" do you mean that the blade is not as wide as other 4/8s?
From my experience they are standard 4/8 width as with other 4/8s I have handled.
If you are referring to blade grind there are limited edition 4/8 DTs that were made for competition which have a fuller hollow ground blade unlike the standard DT´s, similar to the Heljestrand blade grinds.



My guess is that your Cowboy was made in Germany and the "brand" was chosen for the US market, in which case stamping it as "made in Germany" would be counter productive.
Will be very interesting to see if anyone can throw some light onto its origin rather than just speculation

I don't know if the razor in this link will help you Messer der Woche . The cowboy figure seems similar. Regardless, that is a fine catch.

Well I think the logo or figure looks exactly the same myself! So much so - I would feel comfortable emailing the co. and asking when this blade was made! Thanks very much!
